My Why

It was 1986 and my mum put red velvet ribbons in my hair for my brother's first birthday. Even though it was his celebration, I felt incredibly special and spoiled.

As a preteen, I had a favourite headband that I absolutely adored. It was a dark wine-red headband with a gold ric rac ribbon. I always felt like a princess wearing it, especially when my grandma pointed out, that the ribbon's pattern makes it look a bit like a crown.

In 2020, my friends lost their daughter. Lockdown prevented them from organizing the funeral they had envisioned. Instead, to celebrate her life, they asked everyone to share photos of them wearing bows and ribbons (which Evie loved) with the hashtag #ribbonsforevie. It was that occasion that inspired me to make my first pair of hair bows.

It brought back my creative spark and soon I started selling them on eBay. I remember very well, the first pair I sold: someone in Tanzania got in touch as he wanted to send them to his nieces living in London. Since then, I've had the privilege of being a small part of so many beautiful stories. Weddings, adoptions, birthdays, school plays or dance competitions, just to name a few - my hair bows are a part of so many special moments.

When thinking of these precious times, I've come to understand the quiet power of these seemingly simple accessories. From the practical to the profound, they have the ability to help keep hair out of your face, make a little girl feel like a princess or even frame life's precious moments.

It's a privilege to know that my creations have been a part of so many cherished memories. Knowing that my work brings joy to all of you is what powers me on to keep going and create Maggie Moo's sparkly creations.
